After the Israelites crossed over, Joshua was commanded by God to pick twelve men, one from each tribe, to take a stone from the midst of the Jordan. These stones were to be a sign amongst the Israelites. It was to serve as a reminder, and a history lesson for the children when they asked of its meaning. What does this tell us about Godly parenting? Do we have any items in our houses, that represent a testimony or a triumph you experienced in your past? These can be great teaching tools to your children, as each time they walk by, they see evidence of God’s work in your past. Joshua himself also set up stones in midst of the Jordan.
The ark, can represent the presence of God. When going through anything in life, we need His presence to overcome. We need His presence to crossover. The priests who bore the ark, stayed in the Jordan until everything was finished. When all the Israelites crossed over, the presence of the ark of the Lord and priests crossed over with the people. If God starts something in you, He will stay with you until the very end. His presence crosses over with you. He will not leave you alone, because He is faithful and completes His work to the very end.
Men of Reuben, Gad and Mannasseh crossed over armed before the Israelites, as Moses had commanded them. Joshua was exalted in the eyes of the Israelites, just as Moses was. God equips who He calls. If God called you to something, do not think or reason yourself out of your calling. Commit your way to Him, trust in Him and He will bring it to pass. God commanded Joshua to call the priests out of the Jordan, and as soon as the soles of the priests touched dry land, the waters returned and flooded its banks as it did before. The Word of God can override nature. There is no situation that is too much for Him. If a mountain must be moved for His will to be done, it will be moved. The key for us is to follow His instruction. These works are mighty, but Israel wouldn’t have benefited if Joshua didn’t follow His Word.
It's important to note that the banks were flooded. The river was at its roughest. The only conceivable way for Israel to cross over will have to come directly from God Himself. Are you believing God for a miraculous movement? Does it look impossible? Congratulations, you have qualified yourself for a miracle. To experience a miracle, you must face tremendous odds. Here, if we believe, and put our faith in action, we will see God’s mighty hand move in our favor.
The people came up from Jordan and camped in Gilgal, east of Jericho. Joshua set up the 12 stones in Gilgal, and reminded the Israelites to educate their children on its meaning:
“When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’ 22 then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel crossed over this Jordan on dry land’; 23 for the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over, 24 that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever.”
It’s wonderful that the children of Israel had a reference. They know of God’s power in these situations, as they heard, and some experienced it before. If God did it in your life before, then He can do it again. It doesn’t matter what you’re going through, if God is with you, by His mighty Hand you will crossover. I decree and declare in Jesus’ name, that the person reading these words, will crossover, and make it to the other side, by the mighty hand of God.
