I am passenger on God’s unsinkable ship. It has taken me over twenty years to understand the truth and the power in this statement. Like every believer, I have been through some very difficult situations. Like every believer in Christ, I have come out of those with a strengthened faith. No one enjoys hard times. It can be very taxing on you and the people around you. These tests however are necessary in the building of our faith. When I look over my life, and I see the goodness of God through each of my storms, I can truly say “I am a passenger on God’s unsinkable ship.” I am still here.
I’ve grown to see the Word of God like a huge vessel sailing through the waters of life with power and certainty of direction. Like life, these waters can get rough. The clouds can become gray, the sun sets, and rain begins to fall. If you peer through the window at this time, you see many vessels around you sinking and people crying. This scene can cause hysteria. As a part of the beloved, we are in the unsinkable ship. I’ve always known this to be true, but the way I sailed and my attitude on the boat indirectly questioned the ability of the Navigator. Throughout the storms of my life, I would often fuss, worry and sometimes cry my way through. If you believe in the surety of His Word, this is certainly not the attitude we need to sail with. In fact, too much complaining can prolong the journey, or cause you to jump ship.
In Mark 4, it speaks about the account the where Jesus (The Word that became flesh) and the disciples were in a boat together. As they sailed, a great storm arose, and waves beat into the ship. The disciples panicked, but Jesus, was in the back of the boat, asleep on a pillow. The disciples panicked and they woke Him up from His sleep and asked “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” Jesus arose and calmed the storm. It’s His response to their panic that raises my eyebrows. “Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?” Yes, why panic when we are with Him? He is on board with us during our storms. There is no need for fear. We are unsinkable, because the Word is with us.
It took me quite a few storms to appreciate the safety and security of the vessel. I’m glad I’m in a place of peace now. Even as I write this article, things around me in my personal life are chaotic. I am not moved. I have peace in my mind. I can enjoy the ride through this storm. I can dance, I can worship, and I am thankful for the peace He has given to me through His Word. The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. I will learn from Jesus’ reaction to the disciples who woke Him up in fear. I will have faith on this journey, and sure enough, I will not sink, but I will come out victorious. I wonder what would have happened to the wind and the waves if the disciples kept peace?
